I was going to post a comment in response to your last blog entry, but then I saw that wicked long comment already posted there, and didn't think anyone would ever see mine if I posted after that, so I decided to put it here instead. In response to the Afghanistan issue, I think the issue is far more complex than Mr. Harper obviously realizes. Why else would he call for a 6 hour debate followed by a vote? More than six hours is required to come to a decision on an issue that brings into question the lives of countless Canadian soldiers not to mention the Afghani people who have no say in the matter. More over, Mr. Harper clearly stated that the outcome of the vote would have no effect anyways, so the entire procedure was all a show. Mr. Harper is just covering his bases, so if and when something goes wrong in Afghanistan he can point fingers at Liberal MP's who also voted in favor. At first I thought I agreed with the Conservative government’s two year commitment, but upon more closely examining the issue, I feel that is unnecessary to commit at present time to two more years in Afghanistan. While I do feel that we have an obligation to the citizen's and the government of the country, we also have an obligation to allow for self sufficiency. At some point we are going to need to remove Afghanistan's proverbial training wheels and although we can still be there with a band aid at the ready, we need to let go of the bike and let her ride down the path of progression.
